Fundraising to Save the Cabinet

The campaign has been raising funds to help resist the planning appeal as effectively as possible. The developer who owns The Cabinet has assets and ready access to expensive lawyers and planning experts. The Save the Cabinet Action Group is a small community group that depends on the goodwill of supporters to raise money for the expert help we needed to stand any chance of matching the developer’s resources. The developer’s appeal took the form of a Public Inquiry - a formal process similar to a court case - involving lawyers and experts, as well as witnesses. Paying for lawyers and experts was expensive. This is why we launched the Save the Cabinet Fighting Fund. The community response has been fantastic. Through a combination of direct donations, fundraising events such as pop-up pub nights, golf days and use of an online “JustGiving” page we have raised some £24,000. This is a seriously astonishing response which demonstrates the strength of feeling among the community in support of the campaign to save The Cabinet, and the Action Group would like to thank everyone who has helped. This was needed to cover, among other things: Representation by a barrister at the appeal A planning expert A surveyor to provide expert evidence on viability These do not come cheaply, but the Action Group chose its representatives and experts with great care so as to ensure the right balance between value for money and the quality of expertise we need. Following the close of the Inquiry we have paid all our bills - but we have a shortfall of just over £2,000 - so we are still looking to raise funds. A summary of the accounts is here. Our JustGiving page remains open for donations with a revised target based on these predictions. It’s quick and easy to donate online. You can also donate by cheque payable to the Save the Cabinet Action Group, or by BACS (please email us for details). Or you can donate at one of our events such as a Pop-up Pub night.
